Alongside the Energising Small Business grant scheme, Islington Council is providing a limited number of £10,000 grants for larger installations to help local businesses further improve their environmental performance.

What are these grants for?

The grants are for larger infrastructure works that will improve the energy efficiency of the premises of your organisation and minimise its carbon emissions. Grants are specifically available of up to £10,000 for measures such as replacing a gas boiler with a heat pump, installing solar photovoltaic or other larger measures (including insulation projects) that will offer significant calculable energy savings of at least 20%.

Replacing lighting or small scale electrical equipment may be funded instead through the Energising Small Business scheme.

Is my organisation eligible?

The grant scheme is open to any business (commercial enterprise) located in Islington with fewer than 50 staff and a turnover of less than £10m.

Applicants must commit to at least two initiatives from each of the following two social value tiers:

Tier 1 social value initiatives

  • Committing to London Living Wage accreditation
  • Participating in 100 hours World of Work programme
  • Taking on an apprentice or trainee
  • Co-produce case study for the project
  • Facilitate site visits for other businesses
  • Transitioning to cargo bikes for delivery of products

Tier 2 social value initiatives

Terms and conditions

  • To qualify for the £10,000 grant, measures must be for a commercial premises and achieve energy savings of at least 20% (Islington Council will calculate the saving for you after you apply), as long as they do not conflict with good energy/environmental practice.
  • Islington Council will not fund work that is necessary to meet legal requirements. If you are installing any measures that require ongoing maintenance, this will be your responsibility to fund.
  • If successful, you will be required to complete a follow-up survey 12 months after your grant award.
  • Islington Council will assess your application and then arrange a visit to your premises to discuss it in person and verify the potential works. The Council will then work with the applicant to calculate the savings that your project to see if it will meet the minimum 20% energy savings.
  • Then, applicants must provide at least two quotes for the works (ideally from MCS certified installers).
  • Applications to be reviewed & approved by a Panel made up of Local Economy & Energy Services personnel, approvals to be selected based on projected carbon savings, value for money and commitment to social value criteria.
  • The funding will be allocated to a selected number of applicants judged on the above quality criteria of the projects put forwarded.
  • If you are successful, the funds must be spent within six months of receiving the money and you must supply the council with copies of relevant invoices for the work within this time. Once you have notified the council that the works are complete, an officer will visit your premises to validate the fact that the works have taken place.
  • If you do not carry out the works or do not provide the council with copies of relevant invoices within the six-month time, you must repay the money to the council. If you spend less than you were awarded, you must repay the difference.
  • The window will close for applications once we have had a sufficient response.
